Singa Says - December 2009

Trolleys Lost and Found

They appear at HDB void decks, parks or BBQ pits, and sometimes found with broken parts. Missing trolleys has been a problem for supermarkets, causing inconvenience to other shoppers who need them.

To solve this, NTUC Fairprice partnered with SKM to launch the ‘Please Return Supermarket Trolley’ initiative, with the aim of reminding shoppers to return them after use.

General Manager Teh Thien Yew explained why SKM supported this:
“We share the same space and we need to show consideration to the people we share it with.”

The joint campaign was launched in Ang Mo Kio Hub on 10 Feb.

Star Treat for
Good Neighbours

The message of good neighbourliness received a boost of star power as local celebrities and Good Neighbour Award 09 recipients gathered for a "thank you" tea reception at the People’s Association (PA) on 27 Feb.

Voices of Kindness Irene Ang and Edmund Chen took time from their busy schedule to share personal anecdotes on the importance of kindness and building strong neighbourly ties with some 45 award winners and their family and friends. The two popular TV artistes also thanked the attendees for being good neighbours, and encouraged them to continue spreading the message of graciousness in their communities.

The tea reception was co-organised by PA, SKM and the Housing Development Board. The search for more good neighbours continues this year, with new plans to be announced in the next few months.

When Singa met Tiger

To usher in the year of the Tiger, SKM created festive couplets, with the messages, “Reap prosperity and luck with kindness acts” and “Celebrate a bountiful year with a hearty smile”!

Around 40,000 pairs were sent to Far East Flora and Lim Chee Guan, a barbequed foods company. They were SKM’s partners who distributed the couplets to customers who bought Lunar New Year related items.

Couplets were also sent to all schools, government agencies and other SKM partners.

Show Kindness
on Trains

Taken the MRT or NEL trains recently? You might have noticed bright and colourful stickers from SKM, placed just above the priority seats.

In busy Singapore we often get too caught up with our own work, and do not notice our surroundings. Hence these stickers act as reminders for commuters to give up their seats to those who may need them more, and also function as ‘thank you’ messages to those who have done so.

After all, we like to be affirmed and recognised for doing something gracious. So the next time you are on the trains, keep a look out for the stickers, and more importantly, the chance to do something nice for someone else!

Kindness in the Heartlands

Been seeing lions at the Ang Mo Kio, Tampines, Toa Payoh, or Sengkang bus interchanges?

Nothing to worry about your vision! SKM has simply been spreading some kindness in the heartlands with our friendly Singa statues, each carrying the message, ‘Smile, you’d be surprised at the amount of joy it can bring’.

Previously, the statues could be found in the city area. However since early February, our lions have been moved to some of Singapore’s sub-urban centres.

If you do spot any of them, take a picture and send it to us at kindness@kindness.sg. We will post them at our Facebook fan page. If you are already a fan, feel free to post it on our wall!

Kindness RAKs!

Americans participated in Random Acts of Kindness week from 15 to 21 February. This annual event champions the value of kindness and serves as a reminder about how simple gestures can have a much bigger impact on the recipients.

We ask Marilyn Decalo from the RAK Foundation about her thoughts on kindness and graciousness.

Why is kindness important in USA?
Life in the USA can be challenging. Concerns about the economy, our daily responsibilities, and reports of violence are things that can leave us cold and anxious. Although we still live in an age of individualism, we should feel like we are part of a greater whole. This is important to our well-being. Hence, simple acts of kindness connect us closer to one another, help restore the fabric of our society and give us a sense of belonging.

Please share a story about kindness!
In 2009, single mom Dafna Michaelson cashed in her retirement savings to travel the US and record stories of everyday people doing kind acts. She did this for 52 weeks because she believed that these wonderful stories made a difference in America. Check out her story!

What do you want others to know about kindness?
Kindness transforms us and restores our relationships with people. It is a way of being with each other from the heart and honouring what counts most despite life’s obstacles. It takes us to a place of happiness where we may find well-being, encouragement and appreciation for humanity despite daily interruptions. Opportunities for cultivating and expressing kindness are all around us. So do pay a little more attention, and you can see them emerge continually!
