Building nation of kindness – one kind act at a time

June 25, 2013

THE severe haze of the past week has left many Singaporeans worried about its adverse effects on their health and well-being.

Understandably, many of us feel quite helpless about it. It is therefore very inspiring to hear about Singaporeans who have taken it upon themselves to care for those among us who are in need of help (“S’poreans join hands to help people weather haze”; last Friday).

Through their thoughtful initiatives, these groups, along with their volunteers and donors, many of our young included, show the great compassion that Singaporeans have for their fellow men. They show that we are all capable of stepping up to do kind acts for the benefit of others. They inspire the rest of us to emulate them by looking out for the elderly or needy around us and lending a hand in our own way.

I am confident that ordinary Singaporeans and residents will continue to respond to the challenges in the days ahead with extraordinary kindness and thoughtfulness. Their positive actions should encourage us to carry on with our daily responsibilities with unabated enthusiasm because we will surely pull through this together as we have always done.

A nation of kindness starts with one – one person and one kind act at a time.
