Timely message on bringing back kampung spirit

January 09, 2013

THREE cheers to Singapore Kindness Movement general secretary William Wan for a kind and gracious chorus to start the new year (“Bring back the kampung spirit of kindness”; last Saturday).

This is a timely piece with simple, practical and effective recommendations for us to develop our urban kampung spirit of kindness. By urban, I mean that we will need to re-imagine ourselves in a new setting and form of community living, and rediscover a much-desired and latent zeitgeist for us in this new century.

Let all of us begin to redevelop a social norm that we may be proud of, by showing where we stand by where we sit on public transport, as we stand up for kind and gracious behaviour and conduct by welcoming the elderly and those in need to sit.
